Each star in Chinese concept of divinity is a god. Some widely known ones are the God (star) of Longevity, God (star) of Wealth, God (star) of Success and Employment. A person of significant achievement in one’s lifetime can also become a star, such as ancestors and legendary heroes. When China’s social media responded passionately to Stephen Hawking’s passing, one post remarked “one less star on earth, one more star in the sky”. This figurative expression is not uniquely poetic nor personally attributed to Hawking. It is an expression consistent with a concept of divinity that is thousands of years in the making, still shorter than the making of a real galactic star.
