The Sound of Chinese Music

Harper College Lifelong Learning Institute hosts this event. One culture’s music may be noise to another. Educator Yvonne Wolf introduces the Eight Sounds of Chinese musical instruments. Why Eight Sounds? The categories are based on the material from which these classical instruments are made: Metal, Stone, Bamboo, Silk, Gourd, Clay, Skins (Leather), Wood. Each material creates a unique sound. Come and learn about the erhu, a.k.a. the Chinese violin, guzheng (??), a.k.a. the Chinese harp, and pipa (??), a.k.a. the Chinese lute. Attendees are welcome to try a few Chinese percussion instruments.
